Call for work-integrated training for psychologists

New Zealand’s psychologist training model is outdated, with long, theory-heavy pathways that delay practical experience and limit the number of graduates entering the workforce.

A degree-level apprenticeship approach integrating applied learning and supervised practice from the outset would accelerate graduate readiness, reduce costs, and create a fairer, more sustainable pipeline to meet growing mental health needs.
